Private skylight commission for a family home in London, UK.

In this private residence our clients wanted to draw light and colour into a stairway which leads to 3 bedrooms belonging to the children of the family.

Our brief was to design  an artwork that would be playful and timeless, harnessing the light available from the skylight , transforming it and bringing it into the space below. We wanted the artwork to invite curiosity and engagement, using the qualities of dichroic to intrigue the children into learning about the playful properties that light processes as well as the physics behind this.

The large angled skylight is the source of natural light for the corridor, it floods the space with light which alters throughout the day with the path of the sun. An important element of this design was the mirror lining of the window space, which extends the views of the sky and amplifies the light entering the space, setting the canvas for the dichroic design to be infinitely duplicated.

Designing this artwork during the covid pandemic we were especially inspired by the  poignant emblem of home. This influenced our choice to use circular designs which work together as one. We also opted to mirror line the roof light to expand views of the sky and amplify the sunlight available.
