JD

Special commissioned project for Abcam offices in Cambridge.

JD is a window piece created in memory of James Doman- a devoted husband, father and much loved colleague at the company.

“The circular arrangement is a symbol of unity and the whole, which references the integral part he played in his family and workplace. The material brings colour and dynamism that he brought to work with him everyday. Dichroic is an optical material that beautifully describes the magic of light by filtering wavelengths of light to reveal rainbow colours that change depending on the angle and intensity of the light. So when the sun shines through the window patterns of coloured light will shower into the space. The design is contained within a very simple form, however, within that simplicity is an abundance of visual complexity never the same from one day to the next.
James was known at work by his initials JD so I have used the binary code for JD to determine the colour arrangement of the dichroic filters. Starting at the top and rotating clockwise are repeats of his initials. Each letter is separated by a colourless piece which refers to the colour lost with his passing.
I feel very proud to have been asked to create a piece of work in his memory and I hope that when the sun shines it brings with it lovely memories of James.”
