Chris Wood | Artist & Founding Director of the CWL studio

Introducing our new blog feature, "In Conversation with…" where we shine a light on the voices behind the CWL studio.

To celebrate International Women’s Day 2024 we speak to founding Director Chris Wood on leadership, career highlights and building her all female team.

Can you share a specific moment or experience that shaped the trajectory of your artistic journey?

Early in my career there was a defining moment that forever altered the course of my artistic journey. It happened when I had just completed my first circular design named Irdieden. Placing it outside on an overcast day I witnessed its transformation for the first time. As sunlight shone through the clouds, the piece came alive with a kaleidoscope of colours, just like a firework display—hence its name. This experience filled me with excitement and in that instant, I knew that this new direction held something truly special. It was like cracking the code to my creative practice, and from that point onwards my journey truly began.

Why did you decide to set up the CWL studio?

The decision to establish the CWL studio stemmed from a realisation that my artistic practice was evolving beyond my individual capacity. As my ideas evolved and demand for my work grew it became clear that I needed support to bring these visions to life. What began as creating artworks in my home studio soon transformed into collaborations with architects, brands, and exhibiting my work internationally—all made possible by images of my artworks spreading online.  I also saw potential for the work to live on after me, and thankfully I now have a team that are so in tune with my vision I believe it's a possibility.

What do you love about running the studio and growing your all female team?

Running the studio and leading our all-female team has been an unexpectedly fulfilling journey for me. Initially I never envisioned myself in a leadership role beyond managing my own artistic practice. However in recent years I've found a deep sense of purpose in supporting my incredibly talented team.

It fills me with pride to create a space where their voices are not only heard but celebrated. Witnessing the growth and development of each team member is incredibly rewarding, and knowing that I play a part in fostering their success drives me to continue building on my work and studio.

Despite the inevitable challenges and uncertainties that come with running a business I find  strength in the collaborative spirit of my team. We lean on each other for support, encouragement, and guidance, creating a dynamic and inclusive work environment where everyone's contributions are valued.

What message would you like to convey to women around the world who are pursuing their dreams and passions?

I would say, embrace your unique perspective! Believe in your ability to achieve anything you set your mind to and relish the journey of learning, discovery, and sharing your light with others.
