“I was walking along when I heard a strange rusting noise closing in on me, getting closer and closer. When I looked behind me it was a huge murmuration of starlings just over my head. The noise was incredible and I could feel the wind from their flapping wings. I shared a moment with those birds that will stay with me forever.”

Bird on a Wire

2021

BOW (Bird on a wire) is a 1200 mm square wall panel inspired by the fantastic work of Xavi Bou, a Spanish photographer who beautifully captures nature in all its glory. By using a slow shutter technique Bou highlights the whimsical energy of birds in flight and creates glorious sky sculptures from their frivolous movements.

I was drawn to the organic rhythm and almost scaled nature of these forms and envisioned them being represented beautifully in dichroic application.

These images demonstrate how the different angles of the dichroic produce varying patterns that change in intensity with the dynamic nature of varying light sources.

Each line is an exact replica of an individual birds journey in the sky, and the joyous freedom of flight is captured in the expressive swooping lines.
